The order specifically targets social media posts featuring fabricated quotes of the former Indian captain and online listings selling unauthorized merchandise and “fake” signed souvenirs.
Gavaskar, the first cricketer to receive such legal protection in India, filed a lawsuit to protect his personality rights against entities using his likeness for commercial gain or to spread misinformation.
The focus of the legal challenge was that these viral lies could damage Gavaskar’s professional reputation.
According to the report, his legal team highlighted that many of the posts contained fabricated, highly critical comments about current Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and star batsman Virat Kohli.

His lawyer stressed the seriousness of these false allegations, arguing that “Such quotes could seriously jeopardize his credibility as a broadcaster and cricket commentator as it relates to current affairs.”
As per the court’s direction, users will have to remove the offending URLs within 72 hours, failing which the platform itself will have to intervene.
Additionally, following the provision of Basic Subscriber Information (BSI) and IP logs, Gavaskar’s team has been instructed to hold specific users responsible for the posts.
The case follows a growing trend of high-profile “personality rights” litigation in India, placing Gavaskar alongside celebrities such as Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor who have successfully moved the court to stop unauthorized exploitation of their public identities.
