9 MIT students lose visas between Researcher Trump Immigration Crackdown

Arun Jain, 16/04/2025

At least nine members of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) community have unexpectedly canceled their visas and immigration status, President Sally Consubal said, expressing serious concern over the move. He said that it could reduce the global scientific leadership and competitive edge of the United States.

In Email For the MIT community on 14 April, Ms. Cornlawth said nine researchers and students have their visa and immigration permissions that were canceled without prior notification. “Since 4 April, nine members of our community – students, recent graduates and postdox – have unexpectedly canceled their visa and immigration position,” she wrote.

The part of a comprehensive policy change under the administration of US President Donald Trump align with ongoing efforts to suppress the activism of the campus and to tighten immigration control.

Email said one of the affected persons filed a case against the federal government. The MIT is not involved in a suit chased by an independent lawyer on behalf of the student. Email said, “We are directly in touch with the student, and we are extremely concerned that there is no notice or clarification from the government for cancellation.”

Widespread cracks affecting American complexes

according to a CBS News reports, around 530 students, academics and researchers in 88 American universities have canceled their visas in recent months. The report also mentions that about two dozen states were taking legal action against Trump-era policies affecting international students.

MIT is not alone in facing these issues. Institutions such as Harvard and Stanford have also felt the effects of tightening visa policies and immigration restrictions that target or are actively engaged to important individuals of conservative policies.

In her email, Ms. Cornblling warned of prolonged damage, affecting these decisions. He said, “The threat of unexpected visa destruction will reduce the possibility that the top talent from all over the world will come to the US – and it would harm American competition and scientific leadership for the years to come,” he said.

MIT, challenges other federal research cuts

In the relevant development, MIT joined several other top level institutions in filing a case against the Department of Energy (DOE) in the Massachusetts Federal Court on 14 April. Universities are challenging a federal policy change that reduces funding for indirect research costs-a step that can tell important research fields such as advanced nuclear technology, cybersity, and rural grid upgrades. Roots,

“If the DOE policy is allowed to stand up, it will destroy scientific research in Universities in America and badly weaken the deep situation of our country as a global leader in scientific research and innovation,” universities wrote in their joint complaint, Roots Informed

Other plaintiffs include Princeton University, California Institute of Technology and Illinois.

Financial Cut Research is a threat to ecosystem

The DOE announced on 11 April that it would implement a 15 percent flat cap on reimbursement for indirect research costs, translating more than $ 400 million deduction in annual federal expenses.

“DOE grants support the work of around 1,000 members of our community,” cornelable, highlighting the wide impact on MIT’s research infrastructure.

“MIT is an American university, proudly – but we will be severely reduced without students and scholars who connect us to other countries.”

Harvard Funding faces freeze

According to several reports, the Trump administration recently gathered Harvard University about $ 2.3 billion in federal funding. The move followed Harvard’s refusal to fulfill a set of demands from the White House which included curbing campus activism and destroying its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.
