Srinagar, October 22 (IANS) The nine-day autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will begin from Thursday and there is a possibility of fireworks from the opposition.
The session will begin with Tribute References on the first day and will function on six working days.
The session is expected to be a stormy one as the opposition BJP, PDP, Awami Ittehad Party, along with some allies of the Omar Abdullah-led government, are gearing up to demand accountability from the government on poll promises, restoration of statehood, reservation rules etc.
The center of discussion in this session will be the three bills presented by the government. The Cabinet has already given its approval for enactment of the Jammu and Kashmir Shops and Business Establishment Bill, 2025 along with amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Panchayati Raj Act, 1989 and the Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017.
The autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly is expected to be a stormy one, with opposition parties preparing to corner the ruling National Conference-led government on several issues.
The session is expected to see fireworks from the opposition on issues of governance, promises made by the National Conference in its election manifesto, statehood and reservations.
The Legislative Assembly Secretariat has received 450 questions, 13 private members’ bills and 55 private members’ resolutions for the session.
Thirty-three private members’ bills introduced in the last Assembly session are pending in the House and will be given priority in business on October 28 – the day fixed for private members.
Meanwhile, the Business Advisory Committee of the Assembly is meeting at the Speaker’s office on Wednesday at 3 pm to discuss the time allocation for business in the House.
The role of the committee is to suggest how much time should be devoted to discussion of bills and other matters as directed by the Speaker in consultation with the Leader of the House.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather had rejected People’s Conference (PC) president and MLA Sajjad Lone’s proposal to restore statehood. The Speaker has ruled that the matter is before the court and it cannot be voted on in the Assembly.
