Kolkata, October 21 (IANS) Police on Tuesday arrested eight people in connection with the murder of a tribal woman on suspicion of witchcraft. The incident took place on the night of Kali Puja in Chapuri village of Para police station in Purulia district.
According to police sources, the name of the deceased is Padabi Tudu and his relatives beat him to death. Police have so far arrested 8 people including the brother-in-law of the deceased woman.
According to local sources, Padabi was preparing for Kali Puja at home on Monday. At the same time his brother-in-law Hitler Tudu and his wife Jaleshwari came and dragged Padabi to the edge of the courtyard. It is alleged that he was beaten with sticks there. It is also alleged that Padabi was hit on the head with an ax kept in the house.
Local people saved the blood-soaked woman and took her to Para Block Primary Health Centre. However, doctors declared him dead. On receiving the information, the team of Para police station reached the spot. The body was sent to Purulia Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
A senior police officer from Purulia district said, “Eight people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Most of them are relatives of the deceased woman. Investigation has started.”
Subhash Tudu, husband of the deceased, said, “I had gone to the market in the evening to buy food items for Kali Puja. At the same time, 8 to 10 people, including my grandfather, accused my wife of being a witch and beat me up. My wife was beaten with sticks, rods and axes. After getting information about the incident, I came home. But I was not allowed to enter the house. Later I saw that my wife was lying in a bloody condition.”
He demanded strict punishment to the accused people.
