Bhubaneswar, Nov 2 (IANS) Police in Odisha’s Malkangiri district made a significant breakthrough on Sunday by busting a gang involved in illegal smuggling of hashish oil. A top police officer gave this information.
Speaking to media persons, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinod Patil said that the police have seized 60 kg of hashish oil.
He said that the market value of the seized hashish oil would be around Rs 8 crore.
Meanwhile, eight unidentified accused involved in the case managed to flee the scene leaving behind eight motorcycles, which have also been seized by the police.
Malkangiri SP also said that efforts are on to arrest eight accused drug smugglers.
According to police sources, during patrolling around 11 am on Sunday, a team from Chitrakonda police station received intelligence that eight people along with eight motorcycles had gathered near the Sal tree forest at ESSAR Chowk and were allegedly waiting to transport contraband liquid ganja or hashish for a buyer from the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh.
Acting on the input received, the patrol team immediately reached the spot to verify the information.
Malkangiri police said in a press statement, “On seeing the police vehicle and personnel in uniform, eight people managed to flee the spot leaving behind their motorcycle and a plastic bag containing suspected smuggled goods. The patrolling team chased the miscreants and tried to nab them, but they managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest.”
SP Patil told the media that this seizure of hashish oil is the first such case in Malkangiri district and entire Odisha.
He also said that according to the data shared by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the highest seizure of hemp oil has taken place in states like Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.
He also said that this is the first such case in Odisha and the highest seizure in a single case in the country.
