In a major crackdown on illegal immigration, the United States has deported 54 people from Haryana who allegedly entered the country through the infamous ‘donkey route’, police officials said on Sunday. The deported youths arrived at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, Terminal 3, on flight OAE-4767, before being handed over to their families, NDTV reported.

According to Haryana Police, of those deported, 16 are from Karnal, 15 from Kaithal, five from Ambala, four each from Yamunanagar and Kurukshetra, three from Jind, two from Sonipat and one each from Panchkula, Panipat, Rohtak and Fatehabad.

Most of these men are between 25 and 40 years of age. Authorities said they were living in the US without valid documents after entering illegally through multiple countries, often paying large sums of money to human traffickers.

Confirming the development, Karnal Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sandeep Kumar said, “Today, more Indians were deported from the United States, including 50 from Haryana and around 16 from Karnal district. He advised against anyone attempting to go abroad illegally, stressing that this was the wrong approach that would lead to significant problems later on.” Police said that the investigation is going on and if anyone has a criminal record then it will come out during the investigation.

Many people taking this route face extreme hardships, including exploitation by smugglers, dangerous terrain, and constant risk of arrest or death.

Police sources said the deportees were briefly interrogated upon arrival before being released to their families.
