1. A view from a bridge
Streaming Platform: all streaming platforms
Style: Life, Culture and Society
You may have seen inspiring videos on TikTok where strangers told their most personal stories over a red telephone on a bridge with the city echoing behind them.
Its creator Joe Bloom has now turned those viral one-minute reels into a fully realized audio series called A View from a Bridge.
Each episode gathers voices around a theme; The extraordinary installment, To Be a Parent or Not to Be a Parent, explores the longings, fears and dilemmas of parenthood.
In this episode, Alexandra, speaking from London waterloo bridgeRecalls a traumatic birth and near-death experience with shocking honesty: “I will never have another child and that’s really sad. I will never get pregnant again because I can’t trust that I won’t die,” she says.
“You can love your child and hate the way you met them.”
It also features some recognizable voices, such as Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos, who contemplates becoming a father for the first time at age 50, and musician Self-Esteem (Rebecca Lucy Taylor), who grapples with the ticking body and societal pressures to become a mother.
Bloom never interrupts the conversation – his sides are cut off and unheard – allowing each voice to unfold naturally, underpinned by the original, instrumental music. What we get is a collage of human experience that feels poignant and raw.
This isn’t a podcast for people looking for something light to listen to during school, but if you’re craving some connection or empathy in a noisy digital world, this is pretty extraordinary.(By Lara Owen)
