5 facts about Sierra Tunnel, the world’s longest dual-lane project in Arunachal Pradesh

On February 9, 2019, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the Sera Tunnel Project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Sierra Tunnel as part of his one-day visit to Arunachal Pradesh. Built at a cost of Rs 825 crore, the tunnel connects Tezpur to Tawang, close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

  1. The Sera Tunnel will be the longest two-lane tunnel in the world, reaching an elevation of over 13,000 feet. The tunnel is designed to provide all-weather connectivity and overcome the challenges posed by snowfall and landslides on the Baripara-Charidhuar-Tawang highway.
  2. The project, being executed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), has two tunnels and a link road. Tunnel 1 is a 980-meter-long single-tube tunnel and Tunnel 2 is a 1,555-meter-long twin-tube tunnel, with one two-lane tube for traffic and the other for emergency services. The connecting roads between these tunnels are 1,200 meters long.
  3. On February 9, 2019, Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the Sera Tunnel project. Implementation of this massive project required more than 9 million man-hours, with an average of 650 workers and labor contributions per day over the past five years. The construction required approximately 71,000 metric tons of cement, 5,000 metric tons of steel and 800 metric tons of explosives.
  4. The Shela Tunnel incorporates modern features such as jet fan ventilation, fire protection equipment and SCADA control monitoring to improve safety and efficiency.
  5. The Sera Tunnel is located 400 meters below the Sera Pass and is an important passage even in winter. The tunnel helps them quickly transport troops, weapons and machinery along the China-India border.
