Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda, Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday. He is 63 years old.

No one has won a second consecutive Mau election in Uttar Pradesh since 1952, but Mukhtar Ansari won the seat five times in a row starting in 1996, including twice as a Pakistani candidate of the Bahujan Samaj Party, busting this myth. He last contested parliamentary elections in 2017.
Mukhtar Ansari, who has been in jail since 2005 in various criminal cases, was taken to Banda jail from Punjab by the Uttar Pradesh government after a court battle.
The gangster-turned-politician has more than 60 criminal cases pending against him. He has been sentenced in eight cases since September 2022 in different courts in Uttar Pradesh.
In April 2023, Mukhtar Ansari was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. He was sentenced to life in prison on March 13, 2024, in a case related to the use of forged documents to obtain a weapons license in 1990.
The gangster hails from Mauritius and is believed to have strong influence in Ghazipur and Varanasi districts as well. His name appeared on a list of 66 gangsters released by the Uttar Pradesh police last year.
