5.9 collecting earthquake in Afghanistan, no casualties occurred

Kabul:

According to the National Center for Sisamology (NCS), in the early hours of Wednesday, 5.9 earthquakes hit the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.

The shiver occurred at IST (local time) at 04.43 pm, with a sub -center located at a depth of 75 km, latitude 35.83 degrees north and longitude 70.60 degrees east.

NCS shared details on X, stating: “Eq of M: 5.9, on: 16/04/2025 04:43:58 IST, Lat: 35.83 n, long: 70.60 e, depth: 75 km, location: Hindu Kush, Afghanistan.”

There is no immediate report of casualties or structural damage, but authorities and human agencies are closely monitoring the situation.

The Hindu Kush mountain range, which extends in the northeast Afghanistan, is part of a highly earthquake active area, where earthquakes occur often due to the complex tectonic settings of the region.

Afghanistan is accompanied by a collision region between Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which makes it prone to especially seismic activity.

The United Nations Office reiterated the extreme vulnerability of the country for natural disasters for the coordination of human affairs (UNOCHA), given that frequent earthquakes affected weak communities already over the decades of struggle and old development.

According to the Red Cross, a powerful earthquake is an annual phenomenon in Afghanistan, especially in geologically unstable regions such as Hindu Kush.

The western province of Herat also sits on a significant defect line, further connects the country’s seismic risk profile.

In October 2023, a series of powerful earthquakes measuring 6.3 magnitude, destroyed Western Afghanistan, especially Herat, killed more than 1,000 people and displaced thousands. The tragedy underlined the need for pressure for strong disaster response systems and long -term flexibility plans throughout the region.
