49ers start as slight SB favorites against Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers beat the Kansas City Chiefs to become minor Super Bowl favorites, but the spread dropped quickly at sports betting sites across the country on Sunday.

The 49ers opened as a 2.5-point favorite on ESPN BET, but within 20 minutes of posting, the odds dropped to -1.5 points, and on some sportsbooks on Sunday night, odds were as low as – 1 point.

If this line holds, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will be at a disadvantage for the third straight game. Kansas City is 9-3 in Mahomes’ starts.

The Chiefs enter the playoffs with a 10-1 record and their best odds of winning the Super Bowl this season. But Mahomes once again led the way in the playoffs, beating the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens to send the Chiefs back to the Super Bowl for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

The 49ers are the No. 1 seed in the NFC and the consensus Super Bowl favorite when the postseason begins. But they had to survive back-to-back bids from the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.

San Francisco trailed the Lions 24-7 in the first half on Sunday before coming back from a deficit of around 5-1 to win the game. In the second half, the 49ers rallied under the leadership of quarterback Brock Purdy and eventually won 34-31. It was a costly comeback for the betting public, who flocked to bet on the underdog Lions. The Detroit moneyline is the most popular bet in the Championship at BetMGM Sportsbook.

Ahead of the division championship game, Caesars Sportsbook had the 49ers as a three-point favorite to beat the Chiefs in a potential Super Bowl.

“The Niners have had a couple of wins at home and the Chiefs defense has been really good, especially today. They just beat the Ravens,” Caesars Assistant Director of Sportsbook Trading Adam Pullen said Sunday. “That’s why our prices are a little bit lower.”

Pullen said the 49ers would also be slight favorites over the Ravens, adding that he would be surprised if the roster moves enough to make the Chiefs a Super Bowl favorite.

“I don’t think the Chiefs are going to be the favorite, but you never know,” Pullen said.

San Francisco’s moneyline opens at -130, and ESPN BET’s over/under total is 47.5.

The betting favorite has won 36 of 57 Super Bowl games. In Super Bowls, underdogs have a record of 28-27-2. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, there were 28 under, 27 over and 1 putt in the first Super Bowl, with no over/under totals.
