A Toronto man has been arrested in a case fatal hit-and-run collision It happened in Scarborough last spring.
According to authorities, a 27-year-old woman was crossing the street on Birchmount Road, just north of St. Clair Avenue East, around 9:30 p.m. on May 8 when she was struck by a white cargo van.
Police say he was then hit by another vehicle, described as a dark-colored SUV.
Witness Lawrence Clements told CityNews the woman was walking in the middle of the road and looked like she was in trouble just before she was hit.
Clements said he had just arrived home when he saw a woman dressed in white walking through busy traffic on Birchmount Road.
“We then saw a vehicle traveling north on St. Clair and tragically, it struck the woman,” Clementes said. “And then, unfortunately, he was struck by another vehicle going south.”
Officials say an off-duty firefighter in the area at the time of the incident attempted to perform life-saving measures until first responders arrived. However, he was declared dead at the scene.
“It is very rare that such incidents occur when both vehicles do not remain at the scene, but at this point we know that both the vehicles that hit the pedestrians did not remain at the scene,” the acting inspector said. Philip Sinclair.
Investigators located the white cargo van in the Kingston Road and McCowan Road area of Scarborough the following day. The driver was arrested on November 26 and identified as Gregory Manzer, 43, of Toronto.
He has been charged with two offences, including leaving the scene of an accident causing death and careless driving.
Manzer is scheduled to appear in court on January 20, 2026.
Meanwhile, police are still searching for the driver of a dark-colored SUV that was last seen heading southbound on Birchmount Road.
