Officials said that on 6 October (IANS), one of the largest drug crackdowns in Serichela (Jharkhand), Jharkhand, on 6 October (IANS), police arrested three smugglers on Monday and seized brown sugar worth about Rs 40 lakh from Adityapur Muslim Settlement area, said the officials said.

Police said a total of 207.91 grams of brown sugar was recovered during the operation.

According to the police, it is the largest solo seizure of drugs in the district so far.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mukesh Kumar Lunayat told reporters that the operation was done after a specific intelligence input. Acting on the tip-off, a special team led by SDPO Sameer Kumar Sarai raided and caught the three accused, he said.

The arrested smugglers have been identified as Shahbaz Khan (19), who are a local resident with the last three cases – one under the NDPS Act – registered against him; Mohammad Samaur alias Mohammad Ayan (19) of Chhattisgarh; And Rafiqul Islam of Murshidabad in West Bengal (50).

SP Lunayat said the operation was part of a district-wide campaign against the drug trade, and warned that strict action would continue against those involved in the purchase or sale of restricted substances.

The raiding team consisted of DSP Sameer Kumar Sarai, show Vinod Tirkey, and several sub-inspectors and armed police personnel.

Meanwhile, in a related incident a day earlier, the police arrested two persons in the common area of Jamshedpur – Baban Khan alias Sheikh Baban and Pawan Sahu – while they were allegedly smuggling brown sugar. A total of 140 packets (18 grams) of the control of them were recovered.

During interrogation, the pair confessed to being engaged in brown sugar trade for a long time. Police records suggest that several cases have been registered against them in mango, Sitardara and Ulidah police stations.

SP Lunayat said that the series of arrests reflects the intense drive of the district police to eliminate the network of drugs operated in and around Adityapur and Jamshedpur.
