4 Indian-origin men jailed for life for killing Indian delivery driver in UK

Four Indian men in the UK were sentenced to a total of 122 years in prison on Friday after being found guilty of murdering a 23-year-old Indian driver.

The four men, Arshdeep Singh and Jagdeep Singh from Dudley, and Shivdeep Singh and Manjot Singh from Smethwick, will serve at least 28 years in prison.

A fifth man, Sukhmandeep Singh from Peterborough, is believed to be an “insider” who sent four men information about Oman Singh on the day he was killed (Aurman Singh) was sentenced to 10 years in prison for manslaughter.

Earlier in the trial, police said there was no evidence to explain the motive behind such a brutal attack on Oman Singh.

The detective said: “I am pleased that these men have received significant sentences for the brutal murder of Oman Singh. “These five men are dangerous men and they will now serve their time behind bars without causing further harm to the wider public.” Chief Inspector (DCI) Mark Bellamy of West Mercia Police led the investigation into the murder.

He said: “When Orman was brutally murdered in a brutal and planned attack in Shrewsbury, his family were understandably heartbroken and my thoughts and condolences are with them.”

He added: “Today’s sentencing should send a strong message to those who think they have access to our towns and cities to commit violent crime and that we will not stop working to find them and bring them before court.”

Stafford Crown Court Judge Christine Montgomery KC called the attack a “shocking brutality” and a “very public execution”, the BBC reported, while adding that Orman Singh was left Waiting to die on the roadside.

The five men were convicted by the same court last month at the end of a six-week trial.

According to prosecutors, Oman Singh was struck three times in the head with an axe, with one blow penetrating his brain and fracturing his skull. According to the BBC, he was also hit in the head with a golf club with such force that the club head broke off and the shaft bent.

The driver was also attacked with a hockey stick and a wooden bat. He was stabbed violently in the back, piercing one of his ribs. He died on the spot.

In a statement, Oman Singh’s family said they had no words to explain the impact the tragedy had on their lives.

A statement released through police said: “Today, a mother will grow old without a son. A sister will grow up without a brother. We don’t want what happened to us to happen to another family.”

“This is an unbearable loss for us and it has changed our lives. My daughter and myself will live with this, but our happiness and will to live is not there,” it added.

The statement further said: “We would like to thank the police for their diligent investigation and support as we work through this difficult time.”
