33-year-old cyclist hit and killed by truck behind husband

The family of an academic who died after being hit by a rubbish truck while riding her bike home have spoken of their “incomprehensible loss”.

Cheistha Kochhar, 33, was struck and killed on Clerkenwell Road, near the junction with Farringdon Road, at around 8.20pm on Tuesday, March 19.

Her family listed her achievements, highlighting how she worked to improve the lives of poor people in New Delhi and how she hoped to return to India and change her life after studying in the British capital.

They added: “Despite her practitioner and executive experience, she has an academician’s heart, having worked and collaborated with Nobel laureates, eventually arriving in London as a PhD scholar at the London School of Economics. Although it is still in the early stages of her PhD, she will definitely be working on researching and improving collaborations between various pro-social organizations to address the huge challenges facing countries in the Global South.

“She was a passionate patriot who wanted to bring all her expertise back to India to change lives.”

Police continue to appeal for witnesses and any road users with dash cam footage of the aftermath of the collision to come forward.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Chesta was riding his bicycle when he collided with a rubbish truck. The truck stopped at the scene and the driver is assisting police with their inquiries.”
