Sudan’s investment portfolio amounts to US$1.1 billion.

New Delhi:

Johor’s Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, 65, is about to ascend to the Malaysian throne, bringing with him a staggering fortune estimated at $5.7 billion and an empire that extends far beyond the country’s borders.

Sultan Ibrahim’s territory encompasses a range of businesses, from real estate and mining to telecommunications and palm oil. The magnificent palace served as his official residence and was a testament to his family’s wealth. The ruler’s collection of more than 300 luxury cars, one of which is said to have been a gift from Adolf Hitler, is parked on the grounds, as is a fleet of private jets including a gold and blue Boeing 737. His family also maintains a private army.

Although Bloomberg estimates the wealth of Sultan Ibrahim’s family at $5.7 billion, Sultan Ibrahim’s true wealth is believed to be much higher than that. His holdings include a 24% stake in U Mobile, one of Malaysia’s major mobile service providers, and additional investments in private and public companies totaling US$588 million.

He also owns $4 billion worth of land in Singapore, including Tyersall Park, a vast area adjacent to the Botanic Gardens.

Sudan’s investment portfolio stands at $1.1 billion, thanks to strong cash flow from stock and real estate deals.

Sudan’s global footprint

As Sultan Ibrahim prepares to officially ascend the throne today, his role, while largely ceremonial, will be significant in Malaysia’s changing political landscape. Unlike his predecessors, Sultan Ibrahim displayed a unique blend of flamboyance and outspokenness.

His close ties with Singapore’s leadership and business associations with prominent Chinese developers have allowed him to exert considerable influence on domestic and foreign policy.

Sultan Ibrahim’s influence is not limited to his wealth, but also affects the economic landscape of Malaysia. He was the gatekeeper of business opportunities, especially for the Malay community, and he played a key role in major projects through joint ventures with Chinese tycoons.

His business interests and alliances with Chinese investors, coupled with a special relationship with Singapore’s leaders, have made him a key player in the regional economic landscape.
