New Delhi, October 9 (IANS) Three contract workers died after a wall collapsed in the national capital’s Safdarjung Enclave late Thursday night, while four to five others are feared trapped under the debris, rescue operations are underway. The officers provided this information.

A police officer said that a call was received at the police control room regarding the wall collapse incident.

The caller said, “A wall has collapsed, four to five people are trapped under the debris, out of which two to three have reportedly died.”

The three injured victims are aged between 35 and 70 years and are residents of Ghazipur (Uttar Pradesh), Dausa (Rajasthan) and Sangam Vihar (Delhi).

The officer said that the deceased victim was a resident of Madangir, Delhi and her age was 60 years.

On reaching the spot it was found that basement construction work was going on there.

During the excavation, a concrete pillar at one corner slipped along with the basement soil below, causing a part of the wall structure to collapse, the official said.

As a result, workers working at the site were buried under debris and soil.

Police personnel, fire department and disaster rescue teams immediately reached the spot and started rescue operations.

During the operation, four injured workers were rescued and shifted to Sukhmani Hospital for treatment.

Two seriously injured workers were shifted to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where one of them was declared brought dead and the other admitted to the Red Zone, undergoing treatment, the official said.

The rescue operation has been completed and the accident site has been secured.

Further legal action is being taken as per law.

According to Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a call regarding the incident was received at 6.09 pm, following which multiple fire engines were rushed to the spot for rescue operations.

“Five people were reported trapped after an under-construction basement wall collapsed. Before our vehicles could reach, one person was rescued by the local people. The remaining four were rescued by our teams with the assistance of Delhi Police,” the DFS officer said.

Officials said that construction work was going on in the basement when a part of the wall suddenly collapsed, trapping the workers inside.
