An Ecuadorian lawmaker was shot dead shortly after chairing an important meeting on Wednesday.
Diana Carnero, 29, was attacked while recording a video about poor road conditions in Naranjar, Guayas.
She was shot in the head by two men on a motorcycle. “Two male suspects approached her on a motorcycle and shot her in the head before running away,” police said.
She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Police said no arrests have been made so far in the case and a search for the accused is ongoing.
Her murder caused an uproar across the country.
“Diana was 29. It was a nightmare. When you have children of that age you understand what their parents must be suffering. They cut short their commitment to Naranjal and their motherland. What a shame! “Former President Rafael Correa.
Blanca López, deputy mayor of Guayaquil, also wrote on Lives are put at risk.”
Diana Carneiro’s death is the latest in a series of political violence.
President Daniel Noboa declared a state of emergency last month amid a surge in violence from organized crime groups. The mob warned that anyone found outside after 11pm “will be executed”.
