23 killed in Goa club fire at midnight; Three women among the victims
At least 23 people died in a fire that broke out following a cylinder explosion at a nightclub in North Goa late Saturday night, police said.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said most of the dead were kitchen staff at the club and three women were also among them. He said “three to four tourists” were among those killed.
Sawant, who reached the spot, told reporters that three of the 23 died of burns and the others died of suffocation.
The Chief Minister said, as per preliminary information, the night club had not followed fire safety norms.
The fire broke out just after midnight at Birch by Romeo Lane. The popular party venue in Arpora village, about 25 km from state capital Panaji, which was opened last year, said Sawant, “We will take action against the club management and also against the officials who allowed it to operate despite violating safety norms.”
“This is an unfortunate incident during the peak tourist season in the coastal state,” Sawant said. “We will conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and strict action will be taken against the culprits,” the Chief Minister said.
Goa Police chief Alok Kumar told PTI that the fire was caused by a cylinder explosion.
“All 23 bodies have been recovered from the premises and sent to the Government Medical College, Bambolim,” said local BJP MLA Michael Lobo.
Lobo told reporters that firefighters and police teams immediately reached the scene and were involved in rescue efforts throughout the night.
Lobo said officials would conduct fire safety audits of all the clubs to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
The Calangute panchayat will issue a notice to all night clubs on Monday asking them to provide fire safety permissions, the MLA said. He said that the licenses of clubs that do not have the necessary permissions will be cancelled.
