At least 22 daily wage laborers in Assam’s Tinsukia district are feared dead after a truck carrying them fell into a deep gorge. of Arunachal Pradesh Anjaw district informed ANI on Thursday. The vehicle, which was passing through steep hilly terrain, reportedly lost control before falling into the valley. Rescue teams have so far recovered 13 bodies, while efforts are on to trace the remaining victims.

Local authorities and disaster response teams began rescue operations immediately after the accident. However, the remote location and rugged topography have significantly hindered access and visibility.

ANI reported that a clear picture of the incident emerged when a survivor managed to reach the Chipra GREF camp and alerted the authorities. The survivor said the accident actually occurred on the night of December 8, when the truck carrying 22 workers veered off the Heuliang-Chaglagam road near KM 40 and crashed into a ditch. The accident, which occurred in a densely forested area with extremely poor connectivity, was not reported by any local agency or contractor until the arrival of the survivor.

The Indian Army has launched a major search and rescue operation in the Chaglagam area of Arunachal Pradesh. The operation was launched based on information received late night on 10 December 2025 regarding a vehicle accident on the Hyuliang-Chaglagam road near KM 40.… pic.twitter.com/2a7q0Ns7e1

Following this information, the Indian Army’s Spear Corps launched a major search and rescue (SAR) operation on 11 December, deploying multiple teams along with medical units, GREF officers, local police, NDRF personnel and the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Hyuliang. After about four hours of intensive search and rope-assisted descent, the teams found the damaged truck about 200 meters down the road, hidden by dense vegetation and invisible even from helicopters. Eighteen bodies were seen at the location and the process of removing them with the help of belay ropes is underway.
