Regarding the September 27 stampede in Karur, in which 41 people were killed and over 60 injured, he said people were questioning the ‘hasty’ appointment of a one-member commission, which has been suspended by the Supreme Court, and top officials of the state government were holding a press meet to explain the chronology of events that took place on that fateful day.
The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam founder-chief was speaking at a special general council meeting of the party at a private hotel in this coastal town, about 50 km from Chennai.
Vijay, who has been critical of DMK, once again criticized the ruling party and its President and Chief Minister MK Stalin.
In an apparent reference to the post-stampede situation, he said the obstacles faced by the party are temporary and “we will shatter them all.” He reiterated that the fight in the 2026 assembly elections will be limited to between DMK and TVK.
He said, “The contest is only between two” and party officials responded by saying “TVK and DMK”. “This competition is going to get stronger. TVK will win 100%.” Vijay said emphatically.
On the Karur stampede, Vijay said it was an “indescribable pain” for him after the death of his loved ones.
Taking on the DMK government over the issue, he said, “People are questioning the hasty appointment of a one-member commission by the Tamil Nadu government to investigate the Karur stampede.” Questions were also raised on the press conference of top IAS and IPS officers on this incident.
On September 27, a TVK rally led by Vijay in Karur left 41 people dead while several others were injured. The Tamil Nadu government constituted a one-member inquiry commission headed by former High Court judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the incident. The Supreme Court later asked, “The obstacles we face are temporary, they will all be broken. When God and nature stand with us as people, who can stop us?”
At the beginning of the meeting, a two-minute silence was observed for the 41 victims of the stampede.
Earlier, the party unanimously adopted 12 resolutions in the General Council. These include authorizing the actor-politician to decide on the party alliance for the assembly elections next year and declaring him the chief ministerial candidate.
