The deployment aims to strengthen passenger safety, especially for women, who constitute about 30% of the metro’s nearly 5 lakh daily passengers. The personnel will support security measures in common areas and ladies-only coaches.
Their duties include guiding passengers, providing information, helping with baggage scanner operations and maintaining a visible security presence at street-level and adjacent areas. They will also assist in overall station security.
Hyderabad Metro Rail has included 20 transgender personnel in its security team from today.

HMRL operates in three corridors with 57 stations and is one of the largest urban transit systems in India. The organization says this induction is in line with the Telangana government’s policy of expanding public service opportunities for marginalized groups.
The government began implementing this policy last year by appointing transgender individuals in roles such as assistant traffic marshals.
HMRL Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed said the recruitment supports both the security needs and the inclusion goals of the state. He said the presence of trained transgender personnel will strengthen frontline services and reassure women passengers.
Officials call this initiative an important step in creating an inclusive mobility environment. Observers say transgender employment in public-facing transportation roles is still uncommon, and the move could encourage similar steps by other public service sectors.
