Guwahati, September 18 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday that security forces have pushed at least 20 Bangladeshi nationals behind to cross the international border to illegally enter Indian territory.
Taking in the X handle, CM Sarma wrote: “Bangladesh pushed back another set of 20 habitual criminals on his base. Our level of tolerance towards illegal migrants is zero, and will continue in this way.”
The state government has taken a strong stance against the infiltration from Bangladesh with CM Sarma, often a warning for the threat of changing demographics into Assam.
He accused the previous Congress governments of providing shelter to Bangladeshi infiltrators and the Chief Minister claimed that Bangladeshi infiltrators had occupied the land of indigenous people.
CM Sarma also earlier also said that although some of the Bangladeshi intruders managed to get Aadhaar card, they cannot enroll themselves in the voter list.
He said that there is no chance that people illegally cross the international border with Bangladesh and nominate themselves in the voter list in Assam as security forces have caught many people who used to enter Indian territory illegally and were pushed back within a few hours.
“Most intruders were arrested around 5 am, and before 9 am, they were pushed back to the neighboring country. In two or three hours, they cannot register themselves in the voter list.”
However, the Chief Minister does not see any loss in double vigilance in this case.
He said, “We have decided to form a group of measures from Bangladesh to detect illegal migrants as some intruders may not be arrested by security personnel,” he said.
The Chief Minister argued that the people of Bangladesh come to India as poverty has increased in the neighboring country after the recent farewell of Sheikh Hasina government.
He also claimed that, unlike traditional apprehensions, mainly those who belong to the Muslim community are trying to cross the border and illegally enter India for jobs.
