Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said 17 people have been arrested so far for directly or indirectly praising the Delhi blasts.

The state government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach on this, the Chief Minister said on the sidelines of a program here.

“We are investigating over 100 social media posts and wherever we have found clear incitement or link to terrorism, we have arrested them and we will continue to do so until we crack the entire ecosystem,” he said.

Later, during the media briefing after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said that the situation in Assam is very different from the terror modules that led to the Delhi blasts.

He said, “In many districts in Assam, Muslims are in majority while Hindus are in minority and want their security.”

He said, “The fight here is very different and the facts emerging about ‘doctor jihad’ in Delhi, Haryana and UP cannot be compared with the challenges here.”

Sarma claimed that they (Muslims) are in the driving seat in many districts and villages and have control over many sectors like hospitals and even media.

The CM had earlier in the day said that nine more people were arrested in Assam for putting up “offensive” social media posts after the Delhi blasts, taking the total number of arrests in this regard to 15.

“15 people have been arrested so far across Assam in connection with objectionable social media posts after the Delhi blasts,” Sarma posted on Twitter.

Sarma said that Assam Police will not make any compromise against those who glorify violence.

The Chief Minister on Wednesday said he has directed the police to arrest those who welcomed the blast in their social media posts.

“We will investigate their links and if we find out that anyone has links with Bangladesh or any other country, we will take very strict action against them,” the CM said.

Sarma said minors and those who were unaware that their devices were used to make such posts will not be arrested, but those responsible will not be spared.

He said many people are now deleting their posts, but “we have taken screenshots and will be strict in this regard.”

He alleged that these were the same people who were protesting in Zubeen area against the government and were now posting social media posts welcoming the Delhi blasts.
