New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the year-long commemoration of the national song “Vande Mataram” at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Friday.
The Prime Minister will also release a commemorative stamp and coin on the occasion. The event marks the formal beginning of a year-long nationwide commemoration till November 7, 2026, celebrating 150 years of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s classic work, which inspired the freedom movement and continues to instill national pride and unity.
The celebrations will include mass singing of the full version of “Vande Mataram” at around 9.50 am in public places with the participation of citizens along with the main event, a statement said.
Vande Mataram will complete 150 years in the year 2025. The national song was written on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Navami, which was on 7 November 1875.
Vande Mataram first appeared in the literary magazine “Bangadarshan” as part of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s novel Anandamath.
Describing the motherland as a symbol of strength, prosperity and divinity, this song gave poetic expression to India’s awakened sense of unity and self-respect. It soon became an enduring symbol of devotion to the nation.
Delhi Assembly will also organize a special program on Friday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national anthem.
Speaker Vijendra Gupta will unveil a commemorative plaque celebrating the milestone, an official statement said.
The event will also feature a cultural program presented by the artists of Sahitya Kala Parishad, which will highlight the spirit of patriotism and unity inspired by “Vande Mataram”.
To mark the celebration, the Delhi Legislative Assembly building will be illuminated in the colors of the national flag in the evening.
Gupta said, “‘Vande Mataram’ is not just a song – it is the soul of India’s freedom movement and a timeless ode to our motherland.”
He said, “The Delhi Assembly is proud to honor 150 years of this national treasure, which inspires unity, sacrifice and patriotism among all Indians. By commemorating this historical milestone, we reaffirm our commitment to the ideals and spirit that have shaped our country.”
