147 candidates vie for 32 seats in Sikkim assembly polls

The Himalayan Assembly elections will be held on April 19.

A total of 147 candidates are in the fray for Sikkim’s 32 assembly constituencies as five nominations have been withdrawn, an official said on Saturday.

Chief Minister PS Tamang and five-time former Prime Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling are contesting the elections.

An independent candidate has withdrawn from the sangha seat in Gangtok district. A total of 44 candidates are contesting in the constituency’s nine parliamentary constituencies.

There are four seats in Solon County, including the Solon-Chacon constituency where the Tamang candidate is located, which has 16 nominees and no candidate has withdrawn his nomination.

In Pakyong district, two candidates withdrew their nominations for the Chujachen and Namcheybung parliamentary seats, and there are now 24 candidates competing for five parliamentary seats, with Tamang and Chamling being the main nominees from the Rhenock and Namcheybung constituencies.

An independent candidate withdrew his nomination for the Nanjiyangaon seat, leaving only 29 candidates, including Chamling from Bok Kamlang. There are seven parliamentary constituencies in this constituency.

In Gyalshing district, one candidate withdrew his nomination from the Yuksam Tashiding parliamentary segment and now 25 candidates are in the fray across four constituencies.

Mangan district, which has nine candidates contesting for three parliamentary constituencies, did not withdraw.

According to the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, 14 candidates were vying for the lone Lok Sabha seat at the end of the withdrawal period.
