New Delhi, Nov 10 (IANS) A total of 133 nominations have been received for the 12 vacant wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), where by-elections are to be held on November 30. An official gave this information on Monday.
Maximum 15 nominations were filed in Narayana (Ward 139).
It is followed by Ashok Vihar (Ward 65, reserved for women) and Chandni Chowk (Ward 74) with 14 seats each, the summary released by the State Election Commission said.
The least number of six candidates are in three wards – Mundka (Ward 35), Dwarka-B (Ward 120) and Dakshinpuri (Ward 164, reserved for SCs).
After voting on 30 November, the results will be declared on 3 December.
The vacant wards include Mundka, Shalimar Bagh-B, Ashok Vihar, Chandni Chowk, Chandni Mahal, Dwarka B, Dichaon Kalan, Naraina, Sangam Vihar-A, Dakshin Puri (SC), Greater Kailash, and Vinod Nagar.
These wards come under major assembly constituencies like Mundka, Wazirpur, Matiala, Najafgarh, Rajendra Nagar, Deoli and Patparganj.
These by-elections have gained importance as experts have described them as a barometer to test the popularity of the Delhi government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
He says the result is reflective of the political sentiment of the city, with the BJP returning to power in the assembly after 27 years earlier this year.
Chief Minister Gupta said that this by-election is a very important step towards ensuring continuous local development, cleanliness and order in Delhi.
He said, “All our candidates are committed to serve the public with complete dedication, honesty and transparency. It is a matter of pride for us that out of our total 12 candidates, eight are women.”
The by-elections had become necessary after councilors from these seats were elected to Parliament and Delhi Assembly in the last 12 months.
11 Councilors including CM Gupta were elected Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
Dwarka-B ward has been vacant since BJP’s Kamaljit Sehrawat was elected MP from West Delhi last year.
According to an MCD official, at present the BJP has 116 councilors in the 250-member Municipal Corporation House, AAP has 98, Indraprastha Vikas Party has 15, Congress has eight and one seat is with an independent.
