11 people died in Bilaspur train accident, police registered FIR against unknown people

An FIR for causing death by negligence and endangering the lives of others has been registered against unidentified persons in connection with the train accident in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district that left 11 dead and 20 injured, an official said on Wednesday (November 5).

Station House Officer (SHO), Torwa, Abhay Singh Bais said, a case was registered at Torwa police station on the basis of a memorandum received from the railway official.

He said sections 106 (1) of the Indian Judicial Code (BSN) (causing death by negligence), 125 (A) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) and relevant sections of the Railways Act have been invoked in the case and further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, Railway Safety Commissioner BK Mishra has reached Bilaspur to investigate the accident that took place on Tuesday (November 4), railway officials said.

Eleven people, including six women, were killed and 20 others were injured when a MEMU (mainline electric multiple unit) passenger train hit a stationary goods train from behind after allegedly crossing a red signal near Bilaspur station.

The accident occurred around 4 pm between Bilaspur and Getora stations on the busy Mumbai-Howrah section, when the passenger train was heading towards Bilaspur from Gevra (in neighboring Korba district).

Passenger train loco pilot Vidya Sagar (53) is also among the dead.

The 20 injured include nine women and a two-year-old boy. Those admitted to the hospital include the passenger train’s assistant loco pilot, Rashmi Raj (34), and its manager (guard) Ashok Kumar Dixit (54) and goods train guard Shailesh Chandra (49), he said.

“The passenger train hit the stationary goods train from behind at a speed of 60 kmph to 70 kmph after crossing the red signal,” a senior railway official said.

“It is now a matter of investigation as to why the loco pilot jumped the red signal and why he failed to apply emergency brakes in time despite the goods train being in the visible distance,” the officer said.

The official said that after the accident, half of the motor coach of the passenger train got stuck on the wagon adjacent to the brake van.

The officer said that the manager (guard) of the goods train jumped from the brake van of the last compartment of the goods train and suffered minor injuries.

Railway officials have announced compensation Rs 10 lakh more to the next of kin of each deceased Seriously injured persons will get Rs 5 lakh, while moderately injured people will get Rs. 1 lakh assistance, an official statement said.

Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai expressed grief over the accident and announced separate compensation. Rs 5 lakh more to the next of kin of each deceased Rs 50,000 to each injured.
