Construction workers on a future college campus in Brooksville, Florida, stumbled across a surprising relic of the past on Tuesday — a 1,000-pound bomb dating to World War II.
The massive bomb, located near the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport, was discovered during construction on the Wilton Simpson Technical College campus. Although initially thought to be active, bomb squads from neighboring Citrus County quickly confirmed it was inert.
“Because it was rusty and rotten, there was certainly no way to tell whether it was live ammunition or inert ammunition,” Hernando County Sheriff Alnion Hughes said in a video posted to social media after the discovery.
Authorities evacuated a half-mile radius of the scene as a precaution. Thankfully, all roads were reopened that evening after the bomb’s inert status was confirmed.
The bomb’s presence is a tangible reminder of the airport’s past life, when it was known as Brooksville Army Airfield and used for training during World War II. The bomb itself was determined to be an M-65 munition typically used against hardened targets and will be safely disposed of with the help of MacDill Air Force Base.
